The Economic Club of Chicago is showcasing Chicago’s latest cultural jewels as the backdrop for this year’s annual Fifth Night celebration.
This special afternoon and evening will provide our members, their spouses and guests a unique opportunity to explore the world-renowned Millennium Park at their leisure, along with the option to participate in three unique events:
- The ceremonial groundbreaking of the Art Institute of Chicago’s new museum building.
- A symposium featuring architects Frank Gehry and Renzo Piano, and architecture critic Ada Louise Huxtable, moderated by Charlie Rose.
- The Pritzker Architecture Prize Ceremony.
We are invited to attend the ceremonial groundbreaking of the Art Institute’s new museum building, which begins at 9:15 a.m., followed by the opening/viewing of “Building for a New Century,” a special exhibition on architect Renzo Piano’s design for this beautiful new building.
Then at 1 p.m., the Art Institute of Chicago will sponsor a special symposium featuring architects Frank Gehry and Renzo Piano, as well as Pritzker Prize jurist and former New York Times architecture critic Ada Louise Huxtable. The symposium will be moderated by Charlie Rose and held in the Joan W. and Irving B. Harris Theater for Music and Dance. There is an additional charge of $25 for this event and we are limited to 300 tickets.
At 6:30 p.m., the Pritzker Architecture Prize ceremony will be held in the Gehry-designed Jay Pritzker Pavilion. California architect Thom Mayne will receive the 2005 prize. Since this event is open to the public, the Economic Club has a limited supply of 300 tickets, which are available on a first-come, first-served basis at no additional charge. There are other non-reserved seats in the pavilion as well as plenty of lawn seating.
Meanwhile, beginning at 4:30 p.m., guides will be on hand at Millennium Park’s various buildings, sculptures and monuments to discuss the designs and answer questions. The 24.5-acre park includes the work of an extraordinary collection of world-renowned artists, architects, planners, landscape architects and designers, including Gehry and Piano as well as Anish Kapoor, Jaume Plensa and Kathryn Gustafson. A list of the park’s founders appears below.
Also, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. there will be a party at the Park Café in McCormick Tribune Plaza featuring a cocktail buffet.
