Accelerating the Journey to Quality: Six Sigma

Today, many companies are recognizing that Six Sigma methodology can drive significant improvement in business processes.  DCT and BP are learning how Six Sigma can benefit us.

GSQ Sponsors Six Sigma

In 2004, Global Sourcing & Quality will extend the reach of Six Sigma in DCT and BP by continuing to sponsor a variety of Six Sigma training courses designed to help key leaders and managers identify, baseline, improve and sustain the effectiveness and efficiency of key business processes using a well-scoped project-based approach. Six Sigma, a very rigorous, disciplined, and data-driven improvement methodology, has been used to drive significant change at a number of global companies. Over 100 people in BP completed Green Belt training in 2003, and their Green Belt projects are now beginning to deliver value.

About Green Belt Training

Six Sigma Green Belt Training
is a set of two 1-week workshop sessions specifically designed to help key leaders and managers to identify, baseline, improve and sustain effectiveness and efficiency of key business processes using a well-scoped project-based approach.  In this highly interactive training, participants will learn Six Sigma methodologies and tools and apply them to mission critical projects they bring to the training.

The training consists of a project selection phase, classroom training (combination of presentation, discussion, simulations and exploration exercises) and individual coaching sessions to maximize individual learning experience and to accelerate project benefits.

Green Belt Certification requires completion of the Green Belt training as well as two improvement projects.

If you have questions about the Six Sigma program, please contact Elaine Kowansky, elaine.kowansky@bp.com.

Who can benefit from Green Belt Training?

The training is applicable to staff who are already leading or are capable of leading improvement activities. While it is not necessary that people be technical leaders in the project area, it is helpful if they are knowledgeable about business strategy and priorities, have influence in the improvement area (have an understanding of the people involved, know or could find out who the customers are and what they want, able to educate and influence others in the Six Sigma methodology, and able to work with others to evaluate processes and make change happen).
Some key attributes to consider for potential participants:
  • self-motivated with a positive attitude
  • change leadership (regardless of work title or position, people who have been change agents in the business)
  • understanding of the business and the linkage between projects and business results
  • project management
  • comfortable working with data (not advanced statistics by any means, but comfortable with numbers & data)
  • results oriented
